In detail
Crossing the Hajar mountains to the east coast
Dubai to Fujairah is roughly 130 kilometres and, traffic permitting, a 90-minute to two-hour drive. It is the only mainland UAE run that crosses a mountain range, and that changes both the vehicle recommendation and the way the day is planned. The E611 Emirates Road to Sharjah, then the E102 through Masafi, is the standard route; the descent from Masafi to the Gulf of Oman coast is the part passengers remember.
Masafi itself is the natural break — the Friday Market sells rugs, pottery and fruit seven days a week despite the name, and it is the last easy stop before the coast. From there it is 30 minutes to Fujairah city, or a right turn towards Khor Fakkan and Sharjah's east-coast enclaves, which most guests find the more scenic half of the trip.
What people actually go for varies. Snoopy Island and the Sandy Beach dive sites draw snorkellers and divers; Al Bidya Mosque, the oldest in the UAE, takes 20 minutes and rewards modest dress; Khor Fakkan's corniche and waterfall amphitheatre suit a late-afternoon stop; and the beach resorts along the Dibba road are the reason for most weekend transfers. A chauffeur waits at each of these rather than being re-hailed, which on the east coast matters — ride-hailing coverage thins out considerably past Masafi.
We run this route in an SUV as standard. The mountain sections are well-surfaced but steep in places, and the extra ride height and luggage volume suit both dive gear and weekend bags. A saloon is available if you prefer and is perfectly capable; the recommendation is comfort, not necessity. Inter-emirate fixed fares start from AED 450, and a full day with waiting time and multiple stops is quoted at the ten-hour rate.
Fuel, Salik, Darb, mountain-road tolls where they apply and parking are all inside the quoted fare. Chilled water travels in the car as standard, which matters more on this route than most — between Masafi and the coast there are long stretches with nothing open. Child seats are free with notice, and we will fit two if the booking needs them.
Timing advice: leave Dubai before 07:30 to have the mountain road to yourself and the coast at its best light, and start back from Fujairah before 16:00 on a Sunday to avoid the weekend return queue at the Masafi junction. Overnight stays are common — if you keep the same chauffeur for a second day, the positioning leg is not charged twice.
