Al Maktoum International (DWC) sits in Dubai South, next to Expo City and about 40 kilometres south-west of Downtown. It is the airport that most visitors have not heard of until their booking confirmation names it, and the first thing to establish is that it is genuinely a different airport from DXB, 45 to 60 minutes away in normal traffic. Arriving at the wrong one is the most common and most expensive transport error made in Dubai.

The passenger terminal is compact, which makes arrivals unusually quick — on a single-aircraft arrival bank you can be through immigration and baggage in twenty minutes. Our chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board, the flight is tracked from departure, and the first 60 minutes after touchdown are complimentary. Because the hall is small, the meeting point is unambiguous; there is no equivalent of the DXB Terminal 3 concourse question.

DWC's real advantage is geographic. It is closer than DXB to Dubai Marina, JBR, Jebel Ali, Dubai Investments Park and the whole south-western corridor: Marina is 25 to 35 minutes, Jebel Ali under 20, and Abu Dhabi 55 to 70 minutes because you begin the journey already past the Dubai bottlenecks. The penalty appears only when your destination is inner-city — Downtown is 40 to 55 minutes and Deira or Bur Dubai closer to an hour.

Private aviation is a large part of what DWC does, and it is handled differently from scheduled arrivals. For FBO movements we stage apron-side by prior arrangement, with the tail number and handling agent confirmed at booking rather than improvised on the day. The car is at the aircraft steps as the door opens, and the same arrangement applies to departures, where we coordinate the arrival time with the handler rather than the published slot.

Airline mix at DWC skews toward low-cost and charter operators — Wizz Air, seasonal European carriers, Central Asian and regional airlines, and cargo. Emirates does not operate scheduled passenger services from DWC. If your ticket says Emirates, you are at DXB; if it names a low-cost carrier or a charter, check the code carefully, because several sell both airports under the single word 'Dubai'.

Fares are fixed at booking and include Salik, parking, fuel, the meet and the first hour of waiting. Because DWC drives into the inner city are longer, those routes are quoted a little above the DXB equivalent, while Marina and Jebel Ali routes sit close to or below it. Nothing is added for a night landing, and the figure does not move if the flight is four hours late.

For departures from DWC, build in more buffer than a DXB flight would need. From Downtown, three and a half to four hours before an international departure is prudent, and more between 7 and 9 AM when both Sheikh Zayed Road and the SMBZ interchange build simultaneously. From Marina or Jebel Ali, two and a half to three is usually sufficient.
